REFLECTION ON TIMETOAST ACTIVITY – WOMEN IN SCIENCE – 11TH OF FEBRUARY

Here are two timelines my students have made on Women in Science to celebrate next February the 11th:

Ada Lovelace

Mae Jemison

  • The learning objectives of the activity

The objectives of the activity were to raise awareness on gender equality and the presence of women and girls in science, practice and improve their reading skills, be able to work in groups where all members have a role and are made accountable for them, and they were evaluated on the evaluation criteria for reading in 1ºESO.

  • The advantages of using TimeToast for this activity

Students enjoyed using technology and English as they usually do, but using this app specifically helped them organise themselves in a linear way.

  • The steps you followed to set up the activity

1)     Students are explained that they need to outline the texts they are given, they can use a dictionary and ask for help.

2)     Students have 3 days to outline the texts and write down to outlines in their notebooks to hand them in for correction

3)     The ICT room is booked two days for students to do the TimeToast timeline. They are also shown some other timelines for guidance.

  • Any problems and how you and the students solved them

Students usually have problems when it comes to delivering the data, that is, they foirget about posting their work on the class’ Moodle, they forget their usb with their work or they forget the password to log in the app. These problems are usually solved with time, when they acquire enough maturity and practice and are more responsible with their work. I usually remind them to write the passwords in their agendas, as well as the tasks to be made daily.

  • The students’ reaction – how did they feel about using TimeToast to complete the task?

They were very excited and they seemed to get on with the app, so I think they will be able to use it in the future for other academic purposes.

  • Some things that you would change / improve next time

I would have given more time to complete the tasks and summarize, and I would have given some time for students to finish their work at home, as we carried out all the activities in class. However, I didn’t want them to use Google Translator, so I kept the work in class. Next time, I´ll plan more lessons and book some more days at the ICT room.

  • At least 3 ways that the use of TimeToast helped you achieve your learning objectives

I achieved all my learning objectives mentioned above, although maybe students’ implication and group work could be improved ion their part, but that comes with time and practice.
